We Care - Traceability
Traceability was flagged as very important early in aquaculture's development. As such, measures were taken by both fish farmers and feed producers to ensure aquaculture maintains a 100% traceable supply chain. As the crossroad between raw material imports and feed distribution, BioMar has an essential role in the supply chain, responsible for traceability both upstream and downstream of our operations. By partnering with our suppliers and customers, BioMar can ensure that aquaculture maintains the best traceability and food safety practices.
Implementing effective traceability systems is necessary to improve food safety and quality practices. These systems allow BioMar to document and test the quality and nutritional profile of all raw materials used, screen raw materials for any concerns, and provide reliable information to relevant stakeholders. This ensures that all the ingredients used in our feed are high-quality and safe for both humans and fish.
BioMar Australia keeps retention samples of all raw materials and feeds used for 2 years, which covers the time it takes a fish to grow to harvest plus some additional time. As part of our traceability tools, our systems allow us to go back (almost six years of operation) to gain details on consumed raw materials in the feed. This allows us to investigate the feed or raw materials used to feed a fish and screen for any concerns even after the fish has been harvested. By collaborating across the supply chain, aquaculture can identify the individual fish you have purchased from a supermarket, test all the feed and raw materials that fish has eaten throughout its lifetime, and contact the suppliers of those raw materials for further details.
Traceability will continue to be a priority at BioMar, because like you, We Care about transparency and We Care about sustainable aquaculture.
